Join our 21st Century treasure hunt!

Wednesday, 19 February 2014

Hide and go seek across Hampshire's forests and country parks this February. Hampshire County Council's Fostering Service is hiding treasure boxes (caches) and the first family to find each one will win a prize.

Geocaching, the 21st century treasure hunt initiative, has come over from Australia and is now extremely popular worldwide, with caches even hidden in space! Geocaching is a great way of getting families out and about into the countryside.

Players try to locate hidden caches using GPS-enabled devices, such as smart phones and GPS receivers. Inside the containers are small treasures which regular geocachers swap and trade.

To join in the fun, go to Hampshire Fostering Geocaches where the coordinates of each geocache will be published and details of how to sign-up at www.geocaching.com can be found. Why not take a photo and log it on the geocaching website to share what your family has seen or found?

Councillor Keith Mans, Hampshire County Council's Executive Lead Member for Children's Services, said:"I'd like to encourage families to take part in our geocaching treasure hunt during the school holiday as it's a great way of getting out into the countryside for a fun day out. Remember to take your wellies and waterproof clothing though as the wet weather is set to continue and take caution in supervising children carefully, particularly in flooded areas."
