New Forest farm shop gets £20,000 from Hampshire County Council

Thursday 27 March 2014

Hockeys Farm Shop, in South Gorley, New Forest, has been awarded £20,000 by Hampshire County Council.

The County Council's Village Shops Grant Scheme offers grants to help increase the use of village shops or to create new community-led village stores. This grant will go towards the total cost of extending the business to offer a wider range of goods and services to local residents and visitors to the New Forest. The total cost of the Farm Shop project exceeds £40,000.

Hockey's Farm Shop is on the site of a working farm from which meat has been sold direct to the public since 1982. It was recently taken over by long standing residents of the area, Jonny and Laura Stainton-Burrell.

They plan to extend the butchers shop, which is famous both locally and further afield for its top quality local produce. There are also plans to double the floor space of the store, provide office space above the shop and stock milk, bread, fresh produce, newspapers and general store cupboard items.

This will mean that residents of South Gorley will be able to buy general groceries locally instead of having to travel three miles to Fordingbridge, the nearest town.

As well as the village of South Gorley, Hockey's Farm Shop serves the parishes of Ellingham, Harbridge and Ibsley, a total of 1,275 people.

Councillor Andrew Gibson, Hampshire County Council's Assistant Executive Member for Business and Rural Economy said: "Village shops are often a lifeline for the vulnerable and can play an integral part in the vitality and vibrancy of a village community. We have been working with village shops in Hampshire to help increase footfall and ensure sustainability through the Hampshire Village Shops Grant scheme."

A total of 30 grants have been awarded to villages in Hampshire since the scheme was launched in 2008.

The Hampshire Village Shops Grant Scheme is targeted primarily at villages with fewer than 5,000 residents which either have no shop or just one shop in their community. Applications are welcome from community associations, village shop associations, parish and district councils as well as formal voluntary associations. Private businesses are eligible to apply if they have the written support from their parish council.
