Hampshire County Council and Network Rail agree to reopen Sway railway bridge

Monday, 14 April 2014

Hampshire County Council and Network Rail have worked together to reopen a busy route in the New Forest.

Following representations from the community and the County Council, Network Rail have suspended their works on the railway bridge on the B3055 between Brockenhurst and Sway.

The bridge was reopened on Thursday 4 April, ahead of the school holidays and Easter period, and will remain open during the summer.

Whilst Network Rail have further work to do on the bridge to bring it up to full strength and protect it from the elements, work to date, has enabled operations to be suspended for the summer, allowing temporary access to the road. This is in recognition of the route's importance to local businesses and tourism over the summer period. The plan is for Network Rail to complete the work during the late autumn/winter, following consultation during the summer months, views will be sought around further closures taking place.

Councillor Seán Woodward, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, said: "Hampshire County Council, local businesses and Network Rail were able to reach a satisfactory solution thanks to a meeting chaired by Councillor Ken Thornber, local County Council Member for Brockenhurst, and currently the County Council's Chairman. I commend Cllr Thornber's part in chairing this meeting and helping to secure this positive outcome."
