Hampshire County Council comments on marine and maritime proposals in the Solent

Wednesday, 16 April 2014

Following an announcement yesterday by Michael Fallon, Minister for Business, of a series of measures to ensure that the marine and maritime sector in the Solent region is sustained and thrives into the future, the Leader of Hampshire County Council, has strongly endorsed the Government's actions.

Commenting on the proposals, Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Roy Perry said: "The Marine and Maritime sector is intrinsic to both the economy and identity of south Hampshire, and we are delighted to hear that the Government has recognised that it is critical that this sector is not just retained, but that measures are put in place to ensure that it thrives in the future. Many of our marine-related manufacturing businesses serve markets across the globe, and it is by assisting such businesses in innovating products and services, that we will enjoy continued economic prosperity in this region. We have the UK's leading marine cluster here on our doorstep, and we should all work hard to develop further this economic asset for both Hampshire and UK plc."

The County Council has worked closely with Rear Admiral Rob Stevens, who was commissioned by Government to undertake this work, to develop the proposals, which form part of the Solent's Local Enterprise Partnership's Strategic Economic Plan.
