Join us on Monday as we raise the flag for Hampshire's Armed Forces

Thursday, 19 June 2014

Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council will again raise the flag for the Armed Forces at the Great Hall, Winchester, on Monday 23 June. This year's tri-service ceremony will be attended by His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester.

The celebration begins at 11:30am with music from The Band & Bugles of the Rifles, at the Buttercross in the centre of Winchester's High Street. This will be followed by a march up the High Street joined by service personnel from the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force.

At 12:30pm at The Great Hall, Castle Avenue, the Armed Forces Flag will be raised, before The Duke of Gloucester unveils the To Honour a Promise Memorial. This permanent memorial represents the fulfilment of a promise made nearly 100 years ago by the people of Winchester, to build a monument in honour of up to two million American troops who passed through Winchester's Morn Hill Camp between 1914 and 1919.

Residents and visitors are invited to join us as we enjoy this special occasion, which marks the beginning of Armed Forces Week.
