Request for 30 mph speed limit in Linford Road, Ringwood

Thank you for your letter and enclosed petition requesting a reduction in the speed limit outside St Johns Hall, received on 2 October 2012. I would like to thank you for taking the trouble to arrange the petition and letting us know of your concerns.
In order to change a speed limit Hampshire County Council officers firstly have to assess whether it is appropriate to do so by measuring current traffic speed and surveying the character and alignment of the road. If they conclude that the speed limit can be changed there is a legal process called a Traffic Order to go through, which includes public consultation. This whole process can take up to nine months to complete, which means there is a limit to how many speed limits can be reviewed each year.
The County Council receives many requests for changes to speed limits and other safety measures, therefore they cannot all be investigated. Once a year the County Councillors for the New Forest area decide which of the requests for their area should be shortlisted for inclusion in the following year's traffic management programme. That meeting is due to take place in November, and the possibility of reducing the speed limit to 30 mph outside St John's Hall has been added as a potential scheme for short listing. An officer will contact you following the meeting to let you know if this potential scheme has been added to the 2013/14 programme.
