Children's Education Garden

Spider sculpture

The Children's Education Garden was created to enhance the education programmes provided by the Gardens' Education Service and is unique as school students were involved in its design as well as in its construction. Students continue to be involved in its maintenance, learning as they work. Harrogate-based sculptor Steve Blaylock was commissioned to create a stunning stainless steel sculpture archway depicting the life cycle of a dragonfly which Sir David Attenborough unveiled - to mark the opening of the new garden. The archway leads to six dipping ponds teeming with aquatic life and buzzing with dragonflies. Want to get your hands on the nets? Then join us on our popular school visits or family learning days. Look out for the nets by the sides of the ponds and have a go at pond dipping on your visit.

The outdoor Mediterranean, Oak and the ‘musical’ Bamboo classrooms are exciting places to explore - full of exotic plants and herbs, and a workshop room enables children to get their hands into the soil to grow their own vegetables and learn about composting. Generous grants have enabled continuing developments including a giant spider and other art projects, bird feeders and bird boxes with cameras.

Look out for the fun Chinese Spouting Bowl in the bamboo classroom! Can you make the waters 'spit' and hum?!
