Chawton

Chawton is famous for its association with Jane Austen who came to live here in 1809, leaving for Winchester only shortly before her death in 1817. The Austen's house is now open to the public and contains many mementoes to Jane Austen. The Knight family have owned Chawton House since the beginning of the sixteenth century and it sits impressively amid the trees beside its neighbour the attractive nineteenth century Church of St. Nicholas.

Further information on attractions to discover in the area and other interesting villages to visit is available.  For information on public services for Chawton please take a look at the Alton local pages.
