HPSN2 – Google Internet Search
You will be aware from schools communication SC010260 dated 7 October, 2013 that Hampshire IT previously applied a workaround to automatically re-apply the safe search function to Google internet searches made from HPSN2 connected devices. However, as this could only support a maximum of fifteen Google domains we applied the workaround to the most commonly used ones.
Its since clear that some students are bypassing these restricted domains and returning inappropriate thumbnail content by searching on the less commonly used and unrestricted Google domains. Therefore, our only option is to block all internet searching from the unrestricted Google domains until Google resolve the wider issue. This will have the following impact for schools connected to HPSN2:
Google internet searching will only be available from the fifteen Google domains listed in schools communication SC010260 dated 7 October, 2013
All blocked Google domains will return a barrier screen
This will not impact any other Google services that schools use (mail, etc) nor any other internet search engines. Whilst schools have a clear responsibility to manage student internet usage we are, nonetheless, planning to make this further change after 4pm on Wednesday 20 November. As this is a background change no HPSN2 service outage will be necessary.

We need to apply an essential security update to the HCC infrastructure that delivers the above Hampshire IT services. Between 8am and 11am on Sunday 17 November 2013 customers may experience a short interruption, of up to 5 minutes duration, to these services. If this occurs, any existing sessions will be disconnected and users will need to log back into the individual service. This work will not result in any functionality changes to any of these services. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Flexible Web Filtering
Our web filtering supplier, Blue Coat, are changing some of the category names in the Web Filtering platform and this will need to be reflected on the Flexible Web Filtering Admin interface (http://fwfadmin.hiow.gov.uk) as used by Hampshire schools. This work needs to be completed by next Tuesday after which the filtering proxy servers will no longer accept the old category names.
Therefore, we are arranging an emergency change for Friday 8 November between 1800-2200 during which the schools FWF Admin Interface will be unavailable. This change is being made outside of normal operating hours to reduce the impact for Hampshire schools.
Please note that your current FWF policies will still apply to any school user accessing the Internet during the above change window, its only the Admin Interface that will be unavailable. Please don’t hesitate to contact the IT Help Desk if you have any further queries.

Hampshire IT has been working with Virgin Media Business to resolve the existing Google safe-search issue, and we are now in a position to be able to apply a change that will re-enforce the strict safe-search function on all Google searches.
The change will be implemented in two stages, affecting different user bases, and due to the severity of the issue we plan to progress with the first stage of the implementation tonight (Thursday 26 September).
Tonight’s change will affect schools with unfiltered internet connections (ie, those which have an agreed waiver with HCC and do not use the HPSN2 web filtering service). The impact of the change is that Google searches will be automatically redirected to a non-encrypted version. The HPSN2 web filtering service will then transparently enforce safe searching as expected. No further aspects of Google services will be affected (for example, logins to Google accounts remain encrypted and secure).
Following the successful implementation of this change, we plan to update the HPSN2 web filtering platform as a whole later, to deliver the same service to all HPSN2 users.
Upon successful completion of all changes, users of the HPSN2 web filtering service will be able to use the Google search engine once more and can be confident in the enforcement of the strict safe-search policy where appropriate.
Users may notice that Google will occasionally display a message stating ‘your network administrator has opted you out of SSL; your traffic may be being intercepted', however this message should not impact the search functionality or returned results.
