Environmental Stewardship is the present agri-environment scheme which, amongst its aims, seeks to protect the historic environment. The Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) identifies features on the holding which might benefit from the schemes using the Farm Environment Plan (FEP). Consulting an Historic Environment Record, in Hampshire’s case the Archaeology and the Historic Buildings Record, is a requirement and DEFRA provide a standard consultation letter in their HLS handbook. The associated charge, set by DEFRA, for presenting the data in a FEP format and providing the necessary interpretation of the data, is reclaimed from DEFRA when the FEP is submitted, as set out in the handbook.
The Archaeology and the Historic Buildings Record can supply landowners with historic environment data without charge, although this would not be in the FEP format.
