This is a partnership scheme between Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council. Streetscape improvements aimed at giving this lively shopping area a better setting. Careful use of materials was made to reflect local character and to make more of important buildings along the length of the street. The work designed by Havant Borough Council included improvements to street lighting, paving in a range of materials including natural stone and brick paviours, widening of pavements, new street furniture and some tree planting.
North Street has been separated from the heart of Emsworth, the Square, by the construction of the new road and roundabout at its southern end. The footways and carriageway were in need of attention and lighting needed upgrading. There was potential to make better use of the forecourt to a parade of shops to provide a small public space. There were a number of buildings, both of architectural merit and of community value, such as the hospital, the museum and the Church whose importance was not reflected in the surrounding streetscape.
