A number of important accessibility improvements have been made at the Discovery Centre including a new evacuation-compliant lift to bring users upstairs to the first floor and a new Adults Services room where the Sensory Team are able to deliver services.
Key to accessibility was the building of a Changing Places toilet.
Basingstoke Discovery Centre has the first Changing Places toilet in the Basingstoke and Deane area. This was made possible by a grant from the Big Lottery to improve accessibility to our services.
Whilst standard accessible toilets meet the needs of some disabled and older people, there are some in our community who require personal assistance to use the toilet. This includes older children and adults with profound and multiple learning difficulties and those with acquired disabilities resulting from severe stroke, head injury and a range of other serious conditions.
A Changing Places toilet can quite literally transform people’s lives. It provides the right equipment, plenty of space and a clean, safe environment.
