Home Library Service

About the Home Library Service

Are you no longer able to get to the library due to reasons such as ill-health, disability, mobility problems or caring responsibilities, and there is no-one you know living locally who could be a "Good Neighbour" and visit for you?

If this is your situation then it can usually be arranged for library materials to be delivered direct to your home on a regular basis by a Home Library Service volunteer.

  • No joining fee
  • Reservations from Hampshire’s stock are free to users of this service.
  • Requests for titles unavailable in Hampshire's stock are not provided as part of this service

Hampshire libraries have an excellent selection of books in large, as well as standard, print to suit your personal reading tastes and interests. We also stock a large range of audio books.

Become a Home Library Service volunteer

Can you spare a bit of time for someone else who loves books and reading? If you can commit to helping at least once a month then you could become a part of our Home Library Service Team taking books to people no longer able to make the journey for themselves.

Our volunteers select, borrow and deliver library material for individuals who can’t get to the nearest library or mobile stop due to frailty or mobility problems and don’t have anyone living locally to exchange books for them.

To express your interest in this type of volunteering, please complete the form below and one of our Home Library Service Volunteer Coordinators will contact you.

Are you having difficulty getting along to your local library?

Perhaps you have a disability or you’re recovering from an operation or illness at the moment, meaning you can’t get out and about very easily?

Or perhaps you have caring responsibilities that make it difficult for you to get out to do those extra things like visit the library.

Whatever the reason, if you’re having a problem getting to us – and you haven’t got anyone who can come and choose your books for you – then how about we come to you?

We’ve already got hundreds of readers signed up to this service – all of them people who’ve been finding it difficult to continue their library visits. Some of them have a temporary set-back, others a more long-term problem.

As we’re part of your local public library service it’s free and we can arrange for your library materials to be brought to your home on a regular basis – usually once a month.

Whatever you need can be delivered to your home, including large print or audio books. We find out what you like – and what you don’t! – and then make up a selection for you to choose from.

Deliveries are made by our Home Library staff or by one of our specially recruited volunteers.

It’s not just about books, either. Information is an important part of our lives - we all need it at some point - and we can help provide that too. We have all sorts of information sources at our finger-tips, so all you need to do is ask the person who brings your library books or just ring us direct. I’ll give you that number to call in a moment.

If you think the Home Library Service is of interest to you, or someone you know, just get in touch with us.

There are several ways to do this.

You can phone us on 0845 603 5631 and say that you are interested in the Home Library Service. We’ll take your name, address and phone number and someone will get back to you to tell you what will happen next.

Calls to this number are free on some BT plans but if you are not on a BT plan, they may cost between 4p and 6p per minute.

Alternatively you can call us on 01329 225 398 – standard and local rates apply to this number.

These are also the numbers to ring if you have a general enquiry or need some information.

If you’ve got access to the internet, there is an on-line application form to apply for the service and, again, one of our staff will be in touch. The on-line form is at the following website address. Please note that there are NO spaces between any of the letters or numbers

You can also e-mail us and tell us that you are interested in the Home Library Service. Again NO spaces between any of the letters.

Or you could use the good, old-fashioned method of writing to:

The Home Library Service
Equal Access Manager
Units 5 & 6 Moorside Place, Moorside Road, Winnall
Winchester SO23 7FZ

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
