School visits to Museum of the Iron Age
We welcome young visitors to Museum of the Iron Age, where we have a number of specially devised sessions to help young historians explore the past.
Our sessions focus on enabling pupils to explore collections – we use our collections, displays and a variety of activities to help pupils investigate the past.
Brief information is available below; if you’d like more detail, please contact us for a Session Plan. We’re happy to work with you to adapt sessions for pupils with special needs.
- Roundhouse Building (KS1&2) - experience our lifesize Iron Age roundhouse to get a feel for living life in one room, then work with us to create scale models of roundhouses.
- Fullerton Mosaic (KS1&2) - learn about the Romans in Britain by exploring the Fullerton Mosaic and Roman life in Fullerton Villa.
- Belts & Brooches (KS1&2) - create your own replica Celtic jewellery through facilitated observation and exploration of our warrior mannequin and our Iron Age artefacts.
- Pottery Artefacts (KS1&2) - work with us to explore the Iron Age through archaeological specimens, costumed mannequins and drawings to inform your own collage work.
- Weaving & Textiles (KS1&2) - follow the production of Iron Age wool from sheep to shawl, then make your own mini loom and try weaving!
All sessions last 2 hours, are facilitated by a specially trained member of our team and are for one class. The cost is £52 (from April 2012).
