Dinosaurs and Beyond
KS1
Using real dinosaur and other fossils specimens, children explore the world of the dinosaurs, what our area was looked like from earliest times to the Ice Ages, what other creatures and plants were around with the dinosaurs and what dinosaurs were really like.
Olympic Animals Summer Term
KS1 and KS2
Which animal can run the fastest or jump the highest? Meet the World Record Holders of the animal kingdom. Find out how animals have adapted to suit their needs. Real specimens to handle and investigate linked to Olympic sports. Which animal features will you give a Bronze, Silver or Gold Medal to?
Animal Antics
Early Years
Nursery and Year R groups can enjoy this ‘museums for beginners’ workshop, using different elements of play to explore our science collection. There are opportunities to dress up, play games, make things and experience well known stories, songs and rhymes brought to life through encounters with the animals that feature in them.
Myself and Other Animals
KS1
In this workshop, children look at the similarities between ourselves and other animals. Activities focus on the things that all animals can do including moving, eating, using senses and having babies.
Animals and Classification
KS1 and KS2
This session is an introduction to variation and classification of animals. Activities allow children to explore the differences between mammals, birds, insects, reptiles etc with frequent reference to the ‘real thing’ and plenty of hands-on time. For younger groups this is done through discussion, a guessing game and observational drawing plus an option to dress up. Older groups can use and produce identification keys. Also available for KS2 Animal Adaptations.
Hampshire Habitats
KS1 and KS2
A session looking at the variety of life that lives in different habitats. Children explore animal adaptations and think about ways in which we can all be responsible for wildlife. In the summer groups can focus on Seaside Science and combine it with a Seaside Holidays in the Past session at Gosport Museum on the Mezzanine.
Minibeasts
KS1 and KS2
Using a wealth of real specimens, children investigate minibeast life cycles, habitats and classification by handling, observing and asking questions. Key Stage 1 groups play a guessing game, do observational drawing and explore things that minibeasts have made! Older groups classify the specimens using the proper scientific group names, and cover the themes in greater detail. Binocular and video microscopes help the children to have close encounters with the creepy crawlies!
Food Chains
KS2
This session explores animal diets and feeding relationships by constructing food chains using real specimens. As a finale, the class put their findings together into a big food web, and demonstrate the impact of people. The session also introduces or reinforces the scientific vocabulary associated with this subject.
Skeletons and Movement
KS2
In this session children investigate bones, joints, muscles and internal organs, using full-size replica human skeletons, models and real animal bones. The whole class get to construct the ultimate jigsaw by putting together a human skeleton! There is an option to compare vertebrates with invertebrates using our collections and equipment plus the opportunity to examine human and animal x-rays. Teeth and Eating workshop also available.
Junior Scientists
KS2
In this session children are encouraged to investigate and revise a range of relevant areas from the KS2 science curriculum by means of specially devised practical activities using specimens and resources from our collections. This session can be adapted to focus on particular revision or assessment needs.
Be a Geologist
KS2
Children become real geologists to find out how to tell rocks, minerals and fossils apart, how they are formed, what they are used for and how they shape the world around us. It is a very practical session which includes sieving soils (separating materials), using keys and experimenting with permeability all with a wealth of hands-on material. You can extend this to a whole day visit by going to the Geology Gallery in Gosport Discovery Centre (within the same building as SEARCH), where there are self led activities for schools, and undertaking a geology trail along Gosport High Street with a leaflet full of different rocks and building materials for the children to spot.
