Hampshire Museums Service

Booking a visit to a community museum

We have a range of community museums, galleries and historic sites, each offering sessions for visiting schools. You can find out what they offer and see Session Plans, Notes for Teachers and Adult Helpers and ideas for Pre- and Post-visit activities by looking at the web pages of individual sites.

To book a visit at one of these sites, please follow these steps

  1. Make sure you know the name of the session you want to book and have 3 possible dates for your visit
  2. Contact the museum, gallery or site in question directly by telephone or in person during their normal opening hours, which you will find on their homepage
  3. Key information will be taken and you will receive telephone confirmation of your visit in 3 working days. You will also be sent a booking form, a Session Plan and Notes for Teachers and Adult Helpers

Risk Assessments

Each site has a Hazard Information Sheet to help teachers complete risk assessments, and some sites and sessions have risk assessments shared with teachers on booking.

Cost and payment

Each led session at one of our community museums costs between £55 and £120 depending on the length of the session and the site in question. Hampshire Cultural Trust is set up as an external customer on IBC so payment is easy by purchase order for HCC schools. Other schools will be invoiced.

Toilets and lunchrooms

The facilities at each community site vary and more information can be found on the school page of each site’s web pages

Pre-visits

Pre-visits are recommended and be made during the site’s normal opening hours. If you would like to see resources used during a particular session, please let the site know in advance (depending on the session, resources may be kept in another part of the County).

Pre-visit discussions can also be undertaken by telephone.

Self-led visits

You are welcome to plan your own visit using our displays. Do check with the site that no other groups are booked in that day. Some sites have resources available for schools to use on self-led visits – please see individual web pages for details and possible costs.
