Role of the Operations Team

The Operations Team has two main areas of responsibility –

Home to School Transport
On the school transport front the team is responsible for securing and managing contracts and individual journeys for approximately 11,000 pupils who are legally entitled to free transport to Hampshire’s mainstream schools (transport for pupils with Special Educational Needs is organised by the SEN Team). This work is done, under a Service Level Agreement, on behalf of the Children’s Services Department (the budget holder) which is responsible for the County Council’s statutory obligation to provide this transport and for setting the policy for the Operations Team to follow.

Public Transport
The County Council currently spends approximately £6.7 million per year in order to provide bus services which are socially necessary, but which are unprofitable for the operators and would not otherwise exist. The planning, implementation and monitoring of these subsidised services, which account for about 15% of bus service mileage in Hampshire, is carried out by the Operations Team.
