Why become an Apprentice?

There are many reasons why becoming an Apprentice is a good idea. You earn a salary, get the same holiday entitlement as other employees, receive on the job training and gain a qualification to boost your CV and you receive valuable work experience with a well regarded employer.

Earning while you are learning

Apprentices do real jobs but you also study towards a qualification at the same time, so you will be paid while you learn.

Hampshire County Council has decided to pay their Apprentices the National Minimum Wage for their age, which is higher than the National Minimum Wage for an apprentice.

Learn on the job

“Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualications and earning money all at the same time. You work towards a work-based qualication such as a National Vocational Qualication (NVQ) and other nationally recognised qualications. Employers all over the country recognise and value Apprenticeships as they show that you’ve been trained in the skills they need.”

During your Apprenticeship you will spend time improving your numeracy and literacy skills, obtain a Technical Certificate and will work towards achieving an NVQ Level 2 related to your area of work. You may spend time at a college or at the premises of an independent training provider, and/or your assessor may come to your place of work. Your manager will ensure that you are given a set amount of time to work on your theoretical studies. Read more at the National Apprenticeship Service website.

Support

There are four partners in the apprenticeship team: the apprentice, the manager, the mentor and the training provider. The four partners will work closely together to ensure the apprentice remains on target to successfully complete the Apprenticeship.

Your Apprenticeship with Hampshire County Council is for a minimum of 12 months and during that time you will be fully supported by your manager who will ensure that you progress in your academic studies and develop the skills necessary for your job. Your manager will arrange for you to attend a Corporate and Departmental induction.You will be assigned a mentor whose role is to help you to settle in to your new job. You will have regular meetings with your mentor where you can discuss any concerns you have about your work or your studies. The training provider will allocate you an assessor who will work closely with you to ensure you are progressing in your theoretical studies and are on track to complete your apprenticeship in the allotted time. You will undertake an induction with your training provider so you are fully aware of what is involved in an apprenticeship.
