Highway Maintenance

Highway Maintenance Network Hierarchy

A key objective of this maintenance strategy is to develop a Maintenance Network Hierarchy for both carriageways and footways in line with the recommendations contained within ‘Well Maintained Highways: A Code of Practice for Highway Maintenance Management', published July 2005.

These maintenance designations are not directly matched to the existing network classifications such as A B C class roads and the required designations as stipulated by the New Roads and Street Works Act. It was never intended that these hierarchies be the same because they cover different aspects of network traffic and purpose. A reasonable correlation has been established, however, between these and other designations and shown in the schedule below.
