7. Assessment Of Load Capacity

7.1 Where appropriate, the assessment of the load capacity of bridges will be updated, normally when principal inspections are carried out.

7.2 The need for a load assessment of a particular bridge shall be checked against the programme for the assessment of County Bridges to National Standard BD21, which was commenced in 1988 and was planned for completion March 1998. The programme covered the assessment of over 1100 bridges designed before 1975 which were not to current loading standards.

7.3 Where a newly discovered or reported structure is accepted as a highway ‘Bridge’, an assessment of load capacity should be carried out without delay, unless it can be shown that it falls outside the scope of technical requirements for the load assessment programme described in BD34/90 and BD46/92.

7.4 A check should be made with the person responsible for heavy load movements over bridges to establish if an assessment of HB or AIL vehicle capacity is required.
