Services for schools and local authorities

Hampshire Archives and Local Studies

A collection of archives relating to Hampshire and Hampshire families, and film and sound archives relating to central southern England.

We also house Hampshire’s local studies library.

The entire holdings have been designated by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council as an outstanding collection of national and international importance, providing an unparalleled resource for schools.

  • Pre-arranged learning visits can be arranged for pupils at Year 6 and above, studying history or geography.

  • The needs of younger pupils, Years 3 to 5, can be met from our resource packs, DVDs and online resources, supplemented by copies of material relating to the school’s locality.

  • We produce a wide range of classroom resources linked to the curriculum for history and geography, including study packs and DVDs.

  • We provide free online resources on our website, as well as through Hampshire Wizkid.

  • We can offer schools curriculum enrichment opportunities in-school in the form of practical half-day workshops for small classes of up to 20 pupils.

  • We give students the opportunity to work as real historians through a range of handson workshops, using original documents, photographs and film.

  • Schools can discover a fascinating and wide range of resources revealing the story of Hampshire and its people, past and present. We also hold items from countries around the world including Europe, Africa, India, America and Australia.

  • We are ideally located opposite Winchester railway station and close to other heritage sites such as the Great Hall, Westgate Museum, Military Museums and Cathedral.

  • We have over 20 years experience of working with schools across Hampshire.

  • We have dedicated on-site facilities, including a school room with interactive whiteboard, cinema, accessible equipment including evacuation chairs, hearing loops and visual aids.

Visits to the Record Office are currently free of charge. Visits in-school are based on half or full-day rates.

We are accredited with a Learning Outside the Classroom Badge, a national accreditation scheme recognising good quality education provision.

We ask for feedback from teachers and pupils during visits and projects.

We work closely with Hampshire Inspection and Advisory Service (HIAS), and the universities of Winchester and Southampton who provide feedback on workshops and projects.

We publish reports and a newsletter on our website.
