Basingstoke has strong twinning links with its German twin town of Euskirchen and annually participates in a Festival of Sport organised by the Basingstoke Sports Council. Visting sportsmen and women are hosted by local Clubs and families on a reciprocal basis and this year (July 5th to 8th) is the 21st anniversary event. German teams arrive on Friday evening to be met by Basingstoke & Deane host groups - Overton & Basingstoke Taekwondo / Summit & AWE Judo Clubs / North Hants Cycle Club / St Mary's Junior School / Basingstoke Academy of Dance / Sherborne St John & Overton Boys Football Clubs / Basingstoke Junior Table Tennis / Basingstoke Junior Badminton / Totally Tennis / Basingstoke & Mid Hants Athletics Club / Basingstoke Volleyball Club. Sporting events take place around the town with all groups also taking part in sightseeing and social events including BBQ, Disco's and trips to London and Thorpe Park. All groups meet up on the Sunday evening for a results and celebration event before Germans head for home on Monday morning and await Basingstoke's visit in 2014. Details of events will be published locally in the Gazette Newspaper with the trophy being presented to the winning towns Mayor on Sunday evening at a celebration event for more than 500 participants.

This event allows the two countries to experience foreign sporting exchanges, share sporting knowledge, tactics and coaching tips plus improve language and a knowledge of local culture. New groups are always welcome if a matching club can be found in Euskirchen and Basingstoke groups can fully agree to reciprocal hosting. The event also assists in bringing local clubs together on an annual basis.
