Orchard Close, located on Hayling Island offers respite care for adults with learning and physical disabilities. Following extensive refurbishment the home re-opened in 2001, and has introduced a number of sustainability initiatives to improve the quality of life for guests and staff. In 2008, the Centre celebrated the 5th anniversary of its sensory garden!
Work was needed to improve outdoor facilities to make the garden accessible and welcoming, and to provide for a range of activities in a safe and comfortable environment.
The design aims to encourage people to interact with each other and nature whilst using the garden.
Sustainability has been taken into account in the choice of materials used and other features provided:
Plants are low maintenance and drought resistant, but still provide interest, sensual stimulation and therapeutic benefits.
Areas needing to be mown frequently have been reduced and wildflowers have been planted
New compost bins are in use and all green waste is recycled.
A raised kitchen garden with herbs and colourful planting has been included to enhance home cooking.
Photovoltaic cells were installed as a pilot
