Award and recognition schemes can provide a framework for schools who wish to improve their sustainability credentials. A number of popular local and national schemes are listed below. The government has also published a document (pdf 1Mb) which outlines how schools could use one of these and other national schemes as part of work undertaken within the National Framework for Sustainable Schools.

The national Healthy Schools Standard provides schools with a framework for delivering their work, aiming to help raise educational achievement, to promote social inclusion and to help reduce health inequalities; it has four focus areas.
Trailblazer is an exciting award scheme promoting outdoor learning and environmental education for young people of all ages in Hampshire. It provides a structure for a variety of outdoor activities and a means of giving pupils credit and recognition for what they have done. It also provides access to a wide range of resources, people and places.

School Travel Plan Awards are given to schools with an approved School Travel Plan (STP) at level three, adopted by the school community and approved by the STP Team. Schools requiring an STP as part of a Planning Application will need to achieve Level Three for their Planning Application to be approved. Please see the STP website for more information on School Travel Plan levels.
Eco-schools is a whole school approach to improving your environmental performance, with a comprehensive framework to help you achieve results. It would be worth considering this scheme as a way of focusing environmental management and learning.
