Transport for South Hampshire and Isle of Wight

Vision

The Transport for South Hampshire (TfSH) strategy has three key objectives: reduce, manage and invest.

Reduce

‘Reduce’ means reducing our need for transport, and the private car in particular, by encouraging shorter journeys, and promoting cycling and walking.

TfSH aims to ensure that new developments are created so that houses are positioned near shops and workplaces and are easily accessible by cyclists and pedestrians; this can be shown in the work on the proposed  North Fareham SDA.

Lifestyle changes such as increased home-working will also be encouraged to reduce people’s need to commute to their jobs. For further information, please take a look at the specific Reduce Strategy pages which include links to Prof. Phil Goodwin’s independent peer review of the strategy.

Manage

‘Manage’ involves improving existing transport provision. For example, TfSH has commissioned studies of the M27 corridor to discover the cumulative impact of planned development and identify what interventions will be appropriate to mitigate congestion. Other possible improvements include the use of priority markings, such as bus lanes, to manage traffic flows and the use of traffic information systems (such as display boards on motorways which warn of incidents and delays) which allow people to manage their journeys more effectively.

TfSH has also established a Bus Partnership Agreement and a Rail Communications Protocol: agreements between public transport operators in the area to enhance the quality of provision through improvements such as Real Time Passenger Information for buses (a display which will tell you exactly when the bus will arrive).

Invest

‘Invest’ entails creating new infrastructure to deal with the planned growth. Schemes such as the new Bus Rapid Transit in Fareham and Gosport, where a bus-only link will be created on the site of an old railway track, aim to improve public transport provision to increase its uptake.

Vision

The overall vision of TfSH is to create a transport system for the sub-region that:
