Basingstoke - accessibility improvements for London Road

The main works are now scheduled to start in late May 2013 and will be completed by about mid-August 2013.

This is a package of improvements to the pedestrian environment on London Road. It will be preceded by various utilities undertaking work to move gas pipes and other infrastructure, which will take place before the main works.

The scheme will focus on improving pedestrian safety and sense of security at a number of key locations, by adding refuge islands to assist crossing and to encourage vehicles to travel more slowly. This will be combined with adjustments to the junctions of London Road with Crossborough Hill and Eastrop Lane, to allow for the carriageway widening to accommodate the new islands.

We anticipate that the main parts of the scheme can mostly be constructed during the school holidays when traffic and pedestrian use is lighter, but the overall package is expected to take up to twelve weeks to complete.
