Gosport - bus priority works at the Brockhurst Roundabouts

The Brockhurst Roundabouts scheme aims to improve traffic flow for Eclipse E1 and E2 and for other bus services through the Brockhurst north and south roundabouts. It will provide high quality bus stops in four locations and improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

These works are planned to start on 10 June 2013 for completion in August. Further details will be posted on this site once the contract is awarded.

Impact on traffic during the works

During off peak times the carriageway will be reduced to one lane. ·Some aspects of the works will be done at night or on a Sunday with temporary traffic lights.

The Proposed Scheme

A new bus lane and cycle lane on the southbound A32, from just north of the roundabouts to the existing Fort Brockhurst bus stop. This will involve reducing the size of the central island of the north roundabout in order to maintain two lanes for all traffic between Rowner Road and the A32.
Widening of the existing footway on the north east side of Rowner Road, between the Brune Medical Centre and the Brockhurst north Roundabout, and conversion to a shared use footway/cycleway, connecting Rowner Road cycle route with the A32 network.
Upgrading four bus stops in the vicinity of the two Brockhurst roundabouts with new shelters, 24 hour CCTV and real time bus, train and ferry times, together with local information, news and weather.
Toucan crossing (pedestrians and cyclists) to be installed on Rowner Road just west of the new Brune Medical Centre. (This
will replace the existing uncontrolled crossing).
Use of the existing southbound toucan crossing on the A32 Fareham Road, between the two Brockhurst roundabouts, to provide bus priority on the Elson Road approach to the Brockhurst south roundabout.
Use of the existing northbound toucan crossing on the A32 Fareham Road, between the two Brockhurst roundabouts, to provide bus priority on Rowner Road.

Background and funding arrangements

The first phase of the South East Hampshire Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) opened in April 2012.

First Hampshire & Dorset (First Bus) bus services, E1 and E2 use the new Eclipse BRT busway for part of their journey. It enables those buses to bypass the worst of the congestion and thus offer fast, reliable journey times between Gosport and Fareham. At both ends of the busway, in Fareham to the north and Gosport to the south, BRT routes E1 and E2 rejoin the on-road network.

Following studies and consultation with First Bus, problems on the Gosport BRT network were identified. Studies demonstrated that by providing junction improvements, including bus priority measures, journey times could be improved on the A32 at the Brockhurst Roundabouts and at The Crossways/ Lees Lane/ Lees Lane North junction.

Funding for the two schemes has come from the Department for Transport Better Bus Area Fund, awarded to Transport for South Hampshire, which is intended for bus related measures that will help to create growth and cut carbon.
