Privilege means there are spare seats on a school bus which could be used by children not entitled to free transport.
If your child does not qualify for travelling assistance you may be able to apply for a ‘Privilege’ seat on school transport. This only applies if the whole vehicle is contracted by Hampshire County Council solely for the purpose of transporting children who do qualify for travelling assistance from home to school and will depend on spare seats being available.
The ‘Privilege’ seat is not guaranteed and can be withdrawn at short notice either for operational reasons or if it is required for a child who qualifies for travelling assistance.
There is a flat-rate monthly charge for ‘Privilege’ seats regardless of the age of the child or the distance travelled. However, if you receive Income Support, income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance or Pension Credit, you do not have to pay.
Privilege seats are not available on public service buses which carry fare-paying passengers.
