A number of local government authorities have deposited items relating to their work and the work of individual departments. Hampshire County Council, for example, commissions videos about its services, whilst its Emergency Planning department had a cinefilm made about a civil defence exercise in the New Forest in 1959.
Southampton City Council and Winchester City Council also commissioned films, often from amateur film makers, to document local civic activities like the opening of a fire station by the Mayor, or royal visits. In this regard, several local authorities managed to obtain film footage shot locally by newsreel companies, with Romsey Town Council being a good example regarding the Mountbatten family.
Portsmouth City Council also commissioned films and is notable for footage shot by its engineering department in the 1960s and 1970s, showing road schemes and construction work on the M27 motorway. There are further items in the collections of Gosport Borough Council, Christchurch Borough Council, Poole Council, West Berkshire District Council and Reading City Council.
