Wessex Film and Sound Archive

Music of local interest (which may also be of general interest) is held by WFSA in various formats, chiefly on audio tapes. Local radio collections are full of interesting material, such as recordings of live concerts, reviews, interviews with musicians and composers, and series on organists, hymns, and big bands.

The Hampshire Youth Concert Band has deposited some of their performances, and we hold master tapes made by the Woodfidley Folk Group.

Local television companies have made programmes about music, such as that on the Wessex Youth Orchestra, Christchurch Folk Festival 1972, rock and roll stars, and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The record label Beulah has produced Aldershot Command Searchlight Tattoo, 1932-1938, and a re-issue of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra recordings with Constantin Silvestri in 1967.

The latter conductor was notable for having left over 400 audio tapes full of off-air recordings of classical music broadcasts in the 1960s, now held by WFSA, which were meticulously catalogued in two notebooks under composers' names
