Wessex Film and Sound Archive

Towns and villages (including rural life)

Everyday scenes are very hard to come by on film, simply because most people prefer to record significant events and family activities, and yet this is exactly the sort of footage most in demand by archive users today, as they research how we used to live. Fortunately, some film-makers took the trouble to record street scenes, buildings, transport and so on in our towns and villages, including rural life.

Locations covered include Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester, Basingstoke, Gosport, Eastleigh, Havant, Alton, Minstead, Lymington, Burghclere, the Isle of Wight, Chalton, Petersfield, Romsey, Fordingbridge, Weymouth, Lyndhurst, Botley, Dorchester, Salisbury and Christchurch.
