Hands-on education centre for learning by discovery

SEARCH for Science

In SEARCH for Science children have the chance to investigate and learn about natural history, geology and biology through studying and handling real museum specimens. A trained facilitator leads each session and encourages learning by discovery, with whole class, group and individual activities using a range of learning styles. Facilitators are equally happy to become a resource themselves with the teacher leading on the learning.

Our menu of sessions is only a guide – you tell us how you want to use us as part of your integrated topic or creative curriculum. Our wide range of specimens, and equipment such as magnifiers and video microscopes encourages visitors to feel like real scientists! In the stimulating environment of SEARCH for Science, children develop their observation and investigative skills and present their findings in a range of exciting ways.

Session themes actively support the science curriculum, with ‘Skeletons and Movement,’ ‘Teeth and Eating’ and ‘Myself and Other Animals’ covering both human and animal bodies, and the other sessions looking at variation and classification in the living world, adaptations, life cycles, habitats, feeding relationships, and rocks and soils. Separate sessions have been devised to meet the needs of Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children and groups with special needs. SEARCH can also develop bespoke sessions for KS3 and 4 or Further Education groups.

The science collections can provide the inspiration for art workshops and SEARCH has a separate room for undertaking messy art work!

A visit to SEARCH for Science includes a free teachers’ pre-visit planning opportunity and a resource pack with lots of information and ideas to support your visit. Evaluation is a vital part of our process and we welcome teachers’ comments, altering or creating sessions to meet your needs.
