Hampshire Museums

Identification services

We operate an object information and identification service but we are not allowed to give valuations. We can only give identifications based on our own collections specialisms. This service is free for the first 20 minutes of research, however if the research is likely to take some time we will charge £26 per hour, or part of an hour. We will always contact you to explain the charges before we undertake the work.

Please take your object to one of our museums where you will be provided with a receipt. If the object is too large to transport or you have difficulty getting to one of our museums, please contact us as we may be able to make alternative arrangements.

To assist us, we require as much information about the origin of your object as possible. This is particularly important for archaeological items and natural history specimens where the location of the find can greatly aid determination and is sometimes required by law. Any other associated details, such as who the object may have belonged to or where and when it was used, may also be extremely helpful.

Normally your object will be passed to our subject specialist staff who are mostly based at our Winchester headquarters. They will examine the object and provide a short written report. We cannot accept any liability for the opinions expressed about an object. The object will then be returned to the museum and you will be informed that it is ready for collection. This process can take up to 8 weeks so please be patient. If you wish to track the progress of your object please contact us quoting the reference number on the top right-hand corner of your receipt.
