Field Marshal Earl Douglas Haig KCB KCIE KCVO

General Officer Commanding at Aldershot, 1912 to 1914

Born on 19 June 1861, Haig was commissioned into the 7th Hussars in February 1885. Haig served in the Sudan in 1898 and a Brigadier Major with the cavalry in Aldershot between May and September 1899.

In July 1901 he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the 7th Hussars and from December 1915 to April 1919 Haig was Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force and the British Armies in France.

He was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in January 1917.
