There's always something new to see with regularly changing temporary exhibitions of art, crafts, photography, local and natural history on at our museums. From the work of local societies and artists; to major touring exhibitions and shows on loan from major institutions. With a whole host of events and workshops on over the school holidays there's plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
The Gallery, Winchester Discovery Centre is delighted to host Grayson Perry's Walthamstow Tapestry from 17 May.This magnificent piece is fifteen metres long and was inspired by the elaborate imagery of early 20th-century Sumatran batik fabrics.Charting our journey from birth to death, it's peppered with leading brands which run alongside images of people going about their everyday lives. Join us to witness this extraordinary piece of work in its full and cheeky glory! The work is on display until 6 July and admission is free.
This new art exhibition commemorates Gosport's role in D-Day 70 years ago. The local community has worked with professional print artist Mary Dalton, and film makers Cass Productions to create a film and a series of images inspired by the memories of those who witnessed D-Day preparations in Gosport first hand. The exhibition runs from 31 May to 2 August. Admission is free.
The Lost World Zoo exhibition is now on tour! Specimens of extinct creatures from our Natural Sciences collection are on show alongside some amazing LEGO models. The exhibition is at Eastleigh and Aldershot Military Museums until 12 July and then at the Red House Museum from 26 July for the school holidays.
The Artists Rifles exhibition opens at the Willis Museum in Basingstoke on 5 July and follows the history of the Artists Rifles volunteer regiment - painters, sculptors, actors, architects, writers and poets who responded to the call to arms. Meet the Artists Rifles through a selection of artworks, including loans from the National Portrait Gallery, the Imperial War Museum and the British Council.
Travel back in time for a war time adventure and enjoy a family experience in the streets of Milestones Hampshire’s Living History Museum. From 5 August join Tom and Emily’s journey through the war years as they investigate a suspected German spy, make friends with cavalry officer and his horse and learn about our allies from the Empire. Write your own war diary and see First World War Hampshire’s home front from a new perspective.
