About this site
The Secondary National Strategy published its music resource ‘KS3 music: a professional development programme’ in 2006. It was sent to every school and local authority (LA) in England. Most authorities then set up local support and training (you can find local contact details here), and many teachers are now engaging with the programme.
The development of the new National Curriculum for 2008 meant that the materials had to be updated to reflect and promote the new requirements. Hampshire County Council has undertaken this work on behalf of DCSF, in association with the Secondary National Strategy and NAME (National Association of Music Educators). By creating a web version of the programme, we have been able to offer greater access to the materials and more flexible routes through the programme than the original DVD.
This site therefore provides a complete CPD programme for KS3 music teachers, with a series of six training units, supporting resources and exemplars of effective practice. All the materials have been designed to enhance the process of professional development – so although there are lots of resources to support teaching in the classroom, remember that they will also demonstrate or reflect a specific aspect of pedagogy.
The texts of these web-based training units are virtually identical to the original versions. There are, however, additional resources, changes to the routes through the document, updates to the National Curriculum references and alterations to the layout to make it easier to use on the web.
Please note: if you have been using the original DVD materials, you can find them archived in the resources section of each unit.
