KS3 Music

a professional development programme

Unit 1: Structuring learning for musical understanding

This unit will help you to plan units of work. You can undertake an introductory training programme by reading the initial text for each of the five main sections:

Objectives and outcomes
  • The importance of musical understanding
  • Reviewing current practice through pupil interviews
Good practice
  • Defining musical understanding
  • A model of learning for KS3 music
Developing practice
  • Learning about contexts for music
  • Learning about musical conventions
  • Learning about musical elements and developing practical skills
  • Sequencing the learning across a unit
Challenges
  • Learning through styles, genres and traditions
  • Working with abstract musical ideas
Evaluation and next steps
  • The impact of planning for musical understanding

You should complete each section and Activity Resource in turn, covering all of the tabs where they appear. This route through the unit will be relatively short but will give an overview of the main issues, together with ideas to try out in the classroom.

To explore any of the ideas in more detail, click on the ‘by reading more’ links. These will take you to a more detailed exploration of the issues, and will provide a more thorough, in-depth training programme.

You can decide how much detail you want to study: just the main texts and Activity Resources; the main text and some of the ‘by reading more’ sections; or everything – which might also include browsing all the associated resources for this unit.

Start now by going to the Objectives and outcomes section.
