Evaluation and next steps
From your study in this unit, you should now have a better understanding of:
- the precise nature of musical understanding;
- how to plan for a breadth of musical understanding across the key stage;
- what progression in musical understanding looks and sounds like;
- how expectations, outcomes and a sequence of learning should be planned for first, with purposeful activities to deliver that learning being planned for later;
- how to plan and teach a unit of work that has musical understanding as its main focus.
To develop your practice further, you may wish to:
- read Activity Resource 5 to compare two pupils' compositions arising from different approaches to planned learning in a unit of work (one focusing on skills, and the other focusing on musical understanding);
- consider how well your own, revised unit was able to focus on aspects of musical understanding;
- explore further the supporting resources for this unit, including relevant effective practice materials and the archived version of Unit 1
482kb from the 2006 DVD.
Having considered these next steps, you may wish to set yourself some personal targets to support your CPD and develop your practice further. You might use these targets to inform your performance management discussion.
