Unit 2: Structuring learning for musical engagement

This unit will help you to plan individual lessons. You can undertake an introductory training programme by reading the initial text for each of the five main sections:

Objectives and outcomes
  • Designing musically engaging lessons
  • Reviewing current practice by reflecting on a recent lesson
Good practice
  • Principles for designing effective lessons
Developing practice
  • Clarity of learning objectives in music lessons
  • How to sequence the planned learning across a lesson
  • Teaching strategies to support musical learning
Challenges
  • Lesson design for different points within a unit of work
Evaluation and next steps
  • Planning, teaching and comparing two lessons

You should complete each section and Activity Resource in turn, covering all of the tabs where they appear. This route through the unit will be relatively short but will give an overview of the main issues, together with ideas to try out in the classroom.

To explore any of the ideas in more detail, click on the ‘by reading more’ links. These will take you to a more detailed exploration of the issues, and will provide a more thorough, in-depth training programme.

You can decide how much detail you want to study: just the main texts and Activity Resources; the main text and some of the ‘by reading more’ sections; or everything – which might also include browsing all the associated resources for this unit.

Start now by going to the Objectives and outcomes section.
