Unit 3: Creative teaching and learning

This unit will help you to make musical learning and teaching more creative. You can undertake an introductory training programme by reading the initial text for each of the five main sections:

Objectives and outcomes
  • Teaching creatively for pupils’ imagination, and National Curriculum (2008) requirements
  • Reviewing how creative your music department is
Good practice
  • Inventive teaching strategies and types of musical challenges
Developing practice
  • Planning for a range of creative work
  • Building successfully on unexpected learning opportunities
  • Using group-work and group-talk strategies to promote creativity
Challenges
  • Using thinking skills to improve creativity
Evaluation and next steps
  • Trying out a range of additional ideas in the classroom

You should complete each section and Activity Resource in turn, covering all of the tabs where they appear. This route through the unit will be relatively short but will give an overview of the main issues, together with ideas to try out in the classroom.

To explore any of the ideas in more detail, click on the ‘by reading more’ links. These will take you to a more detailed exploration of the issues, and will provide a more thorough, in-depth training programme.

You can decide how much detail you want to study: just the main texts and Activity Resources; the main text and some of the ‘by reading more’ sections; or everything – which might also include browsing all the associated resources for this unit.

Start now by going to the Objectives and outcomes section.
