KS3 Music

a professional development programme

Unit 4: Modelling in music

This unit will help you to use modelling strategies. You can undertake an introductory training programme by reading the initial text for each of the five main sections:

Objectives and outcomes
  • The contexts and processes of modelling
  • How effective is the music department in using modelling strategies?
Good practice
  • Thinking aloud – the key modelling process
  • Using questions to help model key ideas
Developing practice
  • Modelling to support different learning styles
  • Modelling the use of talk for pupils
Challenges
  • Modelling to develop confidence
  • Using specialist musicians to model specific ideas
  • Using a portfolio of pupils’ work to model expectations
Evaluation and next steps
  • Putting it all into practice in the classroom

You should complete each section and Activity Resource in turn, covering all of the tabs where they appear. This route through the unit will be relatively short but will give an overview of the main issues, together with ideas to try out in the classroom.

To explore any of the ideas in more detail, click on the ‘by reading more’ links. These will take you to a more detailed exploration of the issues, and will provide a more thorough, in-depth training programme.

You can decide how much detail you want to study: just the main texts and Activity Resources; the main text and some of the ‘by reading more’ sections; or everything – which might also include browsing all the associated resources for this unit.

Start now by going to the Objectives and outcomes section.
