Unit 5: Challenge in music

This unit will help you to provide pupils with appropriate challenge. You can undertake an introductory training programme by reading the initial text for each of the five main sections:

Objectives and outcomes
  • The principles of challenge
  • Testing the principles of challenge in a music lesson
Good practice
  • Introducing challenge for quality, breadth and depth of musical understanding
  • Quality of musical understanding
  • Breadth of musical understanding: thinking, knowledge, skills, National Curriculum (2008)
  • Depth of musical understanding, including National Curriculum (2008) levels
Developing practice
  • Musical language and vocabulary
Challenges
  • Building on pupils’ prior musical experiences
  • Challenging the most able and gifted musicians
  • Developing pupils’ independence
Evaluation and next steps
  • Reviewing the impact of challenge on learning and musical outcomes

You should complete each section and Activity Resource in turn, covering all of the tabs where they appear. This route through the unit will be relatively short but will give an overview of the main issues, together with ideas to try out in the classroom.

To explore any of the ideas in more detail, click on the ‘by reading more’ links. These will take you to a more detailed exploration of the issues, and will provide a more thorough, in-depth training programme.

You can decide how much detail you want to study: just the main texts and Activity Resources; the main text and some of the ‘by reading more’ sections; or everything – which might also include browsing all the associated resources for this unit.

Start now by going to the Objectives and outcomes section.
