Evaluation and next steps
From your study in this unit, you should now have a better understanding of:
- the generic principles of challenge in the classroom and how these can be applied to music;
- improving the challenge for quality, breadth and depth of musical understanding;
- the link between vocabulary, reviewing and evaluating skills and higher-order thinking;
- how to accommodate experienced instrumentalists and vocalists within a KS3 music classroom.
To develop your practice further, you may wish to:
- use Activity Resource 5 to listen to examples of pupils’ work which demonstrate a range of different musical thinking and consider the implications for your own KS3 music curriculum;
- explore further the supporting resources for this unit, including relevant effective practice materials and the archived version of Unit 5
375kb from the 2006 DVD; - explore challenge in the wider context of foundation subjects by studying Module 9 (pages 203–226) of Training materials for foundation subjects (follow the link to DCSF 0350/2002 and download the PDF).
Having considered these next steps, you may wish to set yourself some personal targets to support your CPD and develop your practice further. You might use these targets to inform your performance management discussion.
