Unit 6: Feedback in music

This unit will help you to develop a specific aspect of assessment for learning (AfL). You can undertake an introductory training programme by reading the initial text for each of the five main sections:

Objectives and outcomes
  • The principles of AfL
  • Reviewing how well the department is implementing AfL
Good practice
  • Features of feedback in music
  • Strategies to develop feedback in music
Developing practice
  • Different types of feedback
  • Oral, aural and written feedback
  • Using combinations of feedback
Challenges
  • The range of people who can provide feedback
  • Teaching assistants, visiting teachers, techicians and visiting artists
Evaluation and next steps
  • Reviewing the research on AfL

You should complete each section and Activity Resource in turn, covering all of the tabs where they appear. This route through the unit will be relatively short but will give an overview of the main issues, together with ideas to try out in the classroom.

To explore any of the ideas in more detail, click on the ‘by reading more’ links. These will take you to a more detailed exploration of the issues, and will provide a more thorough, in-depth training programme.

You can decide how much detail you want to study: just the main texts and Activity Resources; the main text and some of the ‘by reading more’ sections; or everything – which might also include browsing all the associated resources for this unit.

Start now by going to the Objectives and outcomes section.
