Passenger Transport

Passenger Transport Group

The Passenger Transport Group plays a key role in supporting and developing public transport services in the County. We don't directly run the buses, but we plan and pay for bus services which are needed but don't pay for themselves. These services are run by commercial operators and cost the County Council around £7 million each year.

To help bus users we promote priority schemes and bus stations and provide a range of local bus and train travel guides and maps.

Arranging school transport is another of our jobs.  Moving around 14,500 pupils daily using 1,300 bus, coach, taxi and ferry contracts together with season tickets on local bus or rail services.  The annual cost is about £21 million.

We also work closely with the train operating companies to improve passenger rail services. This can be through jointly funded station improvements, electrification schemes, or working together to open new stations.

Other forms of public transport are also supported including ferry services and for people who cannot use ordinary public transport, we fund Dial-A-Ride schemes and other community transport initiatives.
