Strike action and your pension
If you are absent from work due to strike action for one or more whole days, the period of your absence will not count as a period of scheme membership and will therefore not be included in the calculation of your benefits.
You can choose to buy back the day(s) of membership you have lost at a cost of 16% of the gross pensionable pay that you would have received had you not been on strike.
If you would like to pay the contributions to cover the period(s) of your absence, you must give written notice to your employer within 30 days of returning to work (although your employer has the discretion to extend this period).
Please note, if you have a contract to pay additional contributions these must still be paid irrespective of your decision to pay the 16% strike contribution.
