Flexibility to pay less - 50/50

When you join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) your employer will enrol you to the main section of the scheme. Once you are a member you will however have the option to move to the 50/50 section of the scheme.

You can choose to pay less into your pension if you need to by choosing to move from the main section of the LGPS to the 50/50 section.

  • You would pay half your normal contributions.
  • You would build up half as much pension whilst in the 50/50 section.
  • The lump sum and dependents’ pensions that would be paid if you die will not be affected.

If you want to pay into the 50/50 section you must notify your employer – you can do this by using the LGPS 50/50 form. Once completed you must send this form to your employer. Do not send it to Pension Services.

Your employer must move you back into the main section of the LGPS after a while:

  • at your automatic re-enrolment date
  • if you move onto nil pay whilst on sick leave, ordinary maternity/adoption or paternity leave

  • if you elect to opt back into the main section

If you want to stay in the 50/50 section, please notify your employer promptly. You can do this by using the LGPS 50/50 form. Once completed you must send this form to your employer. Do not send it to Pension Services.
