Commentary:

Hampshire County

The population of Hampshire in 2001 was 1,240,100, an increase of 70,120 or 6 per cent since 1991. At the district level, the highest numerical and percentage increase in population occurred in Winchester with an increase of 10,840 people (11.2 per cent). While the population of Havant declined by 2,850 people (2.4 per cent).

Between 1991 and 2001, the proportion of Hampshire’s population aged 45 and over increased from 37.1 per cent to 41.4 per cent. During the same period, the proportion of the population aged 65 years and over increased from 14.9 to 16.2 per cent.

The biggest gains in population took place in the 50-59 year age groups, (an increase of 43,620 people) due to the arrival in this age of those born in the post war baby boom. Conversely, the largest decrease (38,390) was in persons in the 20-29 age band, due to the small birth cohorts born in the late 1970s.

There were also declines in the population aged 0-4 years, but rises in those aged 5-14, as a result of the larger number of births in the late 1980s and early 1990s compared with the previous ten years.

The largest percentage increase was in persons aged 85 years and over, whose numbers increased by 8,230 or 48 per cent.

Portsmouth and Southampton

The population of Southampton in 2001 was 217,450, an increase of 20,580 or 10.5 per cent since 1991. Portsmouth increased by 12,000 residents (6.9 per cent) between the two census years, resulting in a population of 196,700 in 2001.

Between 1991 and 2001, the proportion of Portsmouth and Southampton’s population aged 45 and over decreased from around 37 per cent to 35 per cent. The proportion of the population aged 65 years and over also decreased in both cities, but the population aged 85 and over increased in Portsmouth from 1.9 to 2.1 per cent and in Southampton from 1.5 to 1.8 per cent.

The largest gain in Southampton’s population was in the 20-24 year age group, (an increase of 10,380 people), this rise was likely to have been influenced by the shift in where student populations were recorded (in the 2001 Census this changed from their parents’ address to their term time address). Conversely, the largest decrease in Southampton (3,460 people) was in persons in the 60-69 age group.

In Portsmouth the age group gaining the most people between the two censuses was the 30-39 age group (6,320 people). While the age group losing the most people between the two census years was the 60-69 age group (2,330 less people).

In both cities, there were declines in the population aged 0-4 years, but rises in those aged 5-14 years.
