Hampshire Facts and Figures

Small Area Population Forecasts (SAPF)

Summary:

  • Hampshire County Council produces The Small Area Population Forecasts (SAPF)

  • The data provides estimates of the population and the number of dwellings in individual parishes, wards, and districts of Hampshire (as well as the Unitary Authorities of Portsmouth and Southampton).

  • It also breaks the district level data down by the 2004 Urban and Rural Classification.

  • The population figures are broken down by age and gender.

  • All figures are forecasted from 2008-2015.

  • A short summary report accompanies these forecasts called A Demographic Profile of Hampshire. It provides a graphical overview showing the current demographic picture of Hampshire as well as the forecasted trends.

  • There is a technical note explaining the methodology for the forecasts.

  • The population forecasts are based on dwellings supply projections as at 1/4/2008. Market conditions have since worsened and it is now less likely that the projected rates for the early part of the period will be achieved. As a result there is less certainty around these latest population and dwelling forecasts.

The gender data is now available in a separate file.

District Data:

The 2004 Urban and Rural Classification breaks the population of each district down into urban and rural components. There a four categories, Urban, Town and Fringe, Village, and Hamlet and Isolated Dwellings.  For more information regarding this categorisation, please visit the 2004 Urban and Rural Classification pages on the Office for National Statistics website.

The methodology of the Small Area Population Forecasts (SAPF) is different to that used for the Long Term Projections; as such, the two sets of figures are not directly comparable.
