Planning and Development

About Us

The effective planning of minerals and waste is fundamental to the Government's sustainable development objective of ‘prudent use of natural resources’.

Hampshire County Council is both Minerals and Waste Planning Authority responsible for the planning of mineral and waste development in Hampshire*. Decisions on planning applications for minerals and waste sites are determined by the County Council in accordance with the development plan and other important considerations.

The Council is also a local planning authority for administering planning applications for County Council developments, such as schools, libraries, country parks, highway schemes etc.

Day to day matters are handled by professional and technical staff within the Planning and Development group in the Environment Department.

General planning service enquiries, including those about householder planning applications and queries concerning neighbourhood developments should be addressed to the local District or City Council office.

* Portsmouth City Council and Southampton City Council are responsible for the determination of mineral and waste management applications within their Council area. However, strategic planning is jointly undertaken with the County Council.
